Do Stab-Proof Vests Really Work? (6 Things You Should Know)

Posted by Guardian Outfitters on

At Guardian Outfitters, we've worked side-by-side with security professionals for years. And we often get asked about stab vests. So, today, we’re pinning down the answers.

A stab vest is a vital piece of protective equipment designed to safeguard you from knife attacks and other edged weapon threats.

Understanding how these vests work can be a lifesaver, so let's check it out.

What is a Stab Vest?

A stab vest, also known as a stab-resistant vest, is body armour designed to protect the person wearing it from edged weapons like knives.

Some people confuse stab-resistant vests with bulletproof ones, thinking they have adequate cover.

But it’s vital to understand that just because a vest is stab-resistant doesn't mean it is bulletproof, and vice versa. These vests are NOT interchangeable.

You see, the technology used in the vests to protect you focuses on the weapon's impact. It considers the force, speed, size, and shape. As you can imagine, there is a very big difference between the impact of a bullet and a knife.

How Does a Stab Vest Work?

A stab vest spreads the force of a knife attack over a larger area, reducing the pressure on any one point and preventing the knife from penetrating the vest.

These vests work by using layers of tough materials designed to be cut- and tear-resistant.

These layers are often made from:

  • Lexan, a polycarbonate resin thermoplastic (aka very strong plastic),

  • Tightly woven fibres like Kevlar, or

  • Sometimes a combination of materials, including metal mesh or plastic. They work together to absorb and dissipate the energy from the attack.

The outside is covered by Cordura, a durable nylon material that’s strong, lightweight, and flexible.

Our Stab Plate Inserts, for example, combine fibres and strong, flexible steel for a thin but robust layer of protection. They can also be paired with some of our bulletproof vests for extra safety.

Stab-Resistant vs. Bulletproof Vests

It's important to understand that a stab vest and a bulletproof vest are NOT interchangeable.

A stab vest is designed to protect against knife attacks, while a bulletproof vest is designed to protect against firearms. They use different materials and construction.

While some vests offer combined protection, knowing the limitations of your vests is crucial.

Key Features of a Good Stab Vest

Protection Level

Stab vests come in different levels of protection, which tells you how much force they can withstand. Before choosing your vest, consider your job's demands and the possible threats you might face.

Coverage

Different stab-resistant vests cover different areas of your body. But it should protect your vital organs. Look for vests that cover your chest, back, and sides.

The Flex Stab Panel Set we offer at Guardian Outfitters, for example, includes side protection for enhanced safety. It’s compatible with our Classic 2 Pocket Carrier, Full MOLLE Bulletproof Vest Carrier, and Light MOLLE Carrier.

Comfort

You'll likely wear your vest for long periods, so comfort is key. A good vest should be lightweight and breathable—nobody wants to sweat buckets on the job!

Our Stab and Impact Resistant Vests are made from Cordura and weigh just 4.8 pounds (2.18 kg). So, they’ll keep you safe but won't weigh you down.

Fit & Flexibility

A properly fitted vest is essential for both comfort and protection. It should be snug but not too tight. If it's too loose, it won't protect you as well.

You must also be able to move freely while wearing a stab vest. A good vest allows for a full range of motion.

Material

The materials used in a stab vest affect its durability, comfort, and protection level. Look for vests made from high-quality materials, like Lexan or Kevlar inside and Cordura on the outside.

Durability

Your gear needs to stand up to the rigours of the job. A well-made stab vest will last.

Who Needs a Stab Vest?

Stab vests are essential for anyone in a security role, especially security guards.

If you work in a situation where you might face the threat of knife attacks, a stab vest is a must-have.

It's a critical piece of safety equipment that can save your life.

Maintaining Your Stab Vest

Like any piece of equipment, your stab vest must be properly maintained to ensure its effectiveness.

  1. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning and storing your vest.

  2. Regularly inspect your vest for any signs of damage.

  3. If you find any damage, replace the vest immediately.

The Vests & Beyond—Other Stab-Proof Gear

While a stab vest is a crucial protection tool, it's essential to consider other safety gear as well.

For example, our First Tactical Slash & Flash Hard Knuckle Gloves offer hand protection, including Kevlar-lined palms and hard knuckle protection.

At Guardian Outfitters, we're serious about providing quality gear for security professionals. We know your job is essential and want to ensure you have the best tools to do it safely.
