The security industry is booming, and trained professionals are in high demand. Best of all, it offers a stable career with loads of growth opportunities. So, how do you make this happen? You start by completing a comprehensive security guard course.

But let’s get into the nitty-gritty, so you have a clear understanding.

Gearing Up for Your Security Career

Before looking at the how, let’s see what types of security jobs are available.

Airport and Mall Security

These high-traffic environments require vigilant security professionals to ensure the safety of travellers, shoppers, and staff.

Duties include patrolling, access control, identifying potential threats, and responding to incidents.

Close Protection Officer (Bodyguard)

If you would rather pursue a fast-paced and potentially glamorous career, consider becoming a close protection officer.

You'll be responsible for the safety of high-profile individuals, like executives, celebrities, or diplomats, often working as part of a security detail.

Nightclub and Special Event Security (Bouncer)

In this role, you must ensure the safety and security of patrons at nightclubs, concerts, festivals, and other events.

You'll be responsible for controlling access, managing crowds, and responding to disturbances.

Loss Prevention Officer

Loss prevention is a specialized area of security focused on protecting retail businesses from theft, fraud, and organized crime.

Duties may include surveillance, inventory audits, investigating suspicious activity, and implementing loss-prevention strategies.

Residential Concierge

Concierge security officers create a safe and welcoming environment for residents in apartment buildings, condominiums, and gated communities.

They monitor access, patrol the premises, respond to emergencies, and sometimes provide customer service to residents.

Mobile Patrol Officer

Mobile patrol officers conduct security checks at various locations, responding to alarms and creating a visible security presence.

This role often involves patrolling businesses, residential areas, or construction sites. If a dangerous situation does happen, you must maintain it until law enforcement arrives.

Industrial Security

Industrial security guards protect factories, warehouses, and other industrial facilities. You’ll control access, monitor security systems, and respond to emergencies.

School Security

School security officers play a vital role in ensuring the safety of students and staff.

They monitor the school grounds, respond to incidents, and create a secure learning environment.

How to Get a Security Guard License in Canada

If you want to work in security anywhere in Canada, you must be certified. But it’s a really straightforward process.

You must meet the following criteria:

The Exam

After you’ve completed our security guard course, you’ll receive a certificate of completion and your training completion number. Then you’ll be ready to ace your exam!

Use the TCN code to register. It’s a 60-question multiple-choice test. To pass, you must score 63% or higher. There are free security guard practice tests available you can try before you take the actual exam.

When you apply to write your security guard licence exam, you can choose to either write online or in-person. It’ll take about three days for your results to be posted.

The Licence

After you’ve passed with flying colours, you’ll receive an Ontario testing completion number (TCN).  Your online application will take about 15 calendar days to be processed and approved if completed correctly.

To apply, you’ll need:

  • A My Ontario account.

  • Copies of the front and back of two different government-issued IDs.

  • Payment for the application.

  • A passport-size photo.

  • Your original CRJMC.

  • A completed guarantor form if you’re applying by mail.

  • An Ontario address.

As a licensed security guard, you must always have your licence (digital or hard copy) with you while on duty.

You must also always:

  • Identify yourself as a security guard.

  • Show your licence if anybody asks — the public, police, or employers.

A security guard licence is valid for two years, and then you have to renew it.
